4 Ways to Protect Yourself on Myspace
1) Your info is public. Yes, Myspace profiles default to a public setting. This means that while all your friends can see your profile so can everyone else. It's a good idea to go ahead and change your profile settings to allow only people on your friend list to see your profile but keep in mind that is not a fool proof way of keeping bad folks from seeing what you write and publish. So please don't splatter too much personal info on your profile. It makes it way to easy for a predator to find you.
PS be careful what pictures you post up to. It they're on Myspace then they are available for anyone to do anything with. Remember that next time you upload some pictures. Do you want some greasy 45 year old man who lives in his mom's basement to have access to revealing pictures of yourself?
2) People aren't necessarily who they say they are. Sure that friend request says a 17 year old from the town next to you, but how do you know? If you do meet someone you met on Myspace in real life, please don't go alone. Never hurts to keep a bit of suspicion if you allow people you don't know in real life into your friend list.
PS Hey guys, I know she said she's new to town and wants to meet cool guys. Of course she's got a web cam and if feeling, naughty, horny, and hot, but come on now... think a bit. Don't say I didn't warn you when you get suckered and now you gotta a computer full of viruses.
3) Links can take you anywhere. Following up on the warning above, links in Myspace profiles can really take you anywhere. In days gone by you could see where the link was going to as it would display the address on the bottom of the browser, but now Myspace has started scrambling some of these links found in profiles. There are some good reasons why they do this, however, it doesn't help you out if your about to click on the link.
4) Be wary of email. You know those emails you get from Myspace when you get a new message or comment? Yep trust me on this one. Never click the link in the email to go to your profile. It is way too easy to fake an email from Myspace that will contain a link to a fake Myspace page, where you log in. While it may still send you to the real Myspace, what you don't realize is that some one else now has your password. So you don't realize anything's wrong until your best friend calls you telling you your profile is full of porn. Always take the time to type in the web site name in your browser instead of relying on a link to take you there. Typing it out will ensure you know exactly where you are going.
